How the NBA votes for the MVP
Fed VanVleet goes off “I thought Ben Taylor was f-----g terrible tonight"
With all the noise surrounding who will win the MVP this year in the NBA, and the narratives as to why, I wanted to quickly explain the process of who votes for the MVP award and the voting system used to determine the award recipient.
The voting process for the MVP award is conducted at the end of the NBA regular season, which typically ends in April. The panel of voters consists of 100 members, with each member casting a vote for their top five choices for MVP. The first-place vote is worth 10 points, the second-place vote is worth 7 points, the third-place vote is worth 5 points, the fourth-place vote is worth 3 points, and the fifth-place vote is worth 1 point.
Once the votes are tallied, the player with the most total points is named the NBA Most Valuable Player. In the event of a tie, the players with the highest point totals will be named co-MVPs.
The criteria for MVP voting is not specifically defined, and voters are given the freedom to interpret the award based on their own standards. However, generally, voters are looking for a player who has had a significant impact on their team's success, has put up impressive statistics, and has displayed leadership on and off the court.
The MVP award is a highly coveted achievement for the most elite NBA player, and winning the award is a testament to a player's skill, talent, and dedication to the sport. Most of the greatest players in NBA history have won the MVP award, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Stephen Curry.
